The Frauenkirche owes its current form to the late Gothic period. Its austere beauty continues inside. The 15th century frescoes, created by Hans Strigel the Younger, are among the most important of their kind in southern Germany. The "Hawanger Madonna" on the choir arch is attributed to his brother, Ivo Strigel. The Frauenkirche was used "simultaneously" after the Reformation until 1803. This meant that Catholics and Protestants alike were able to celebrate the service.

The Protestant parish church of Our Lady in Memmingen in Upper Swabia is the second largest church in the Protestant-Lutheran deanery of Memmingen. It is also colloquially known as the "Church of Our Lady" or "Our Dear Lady". It is oriented to the east, as was common for church buildings up until the 16th century, is located in the former weavers' and tanners' quarter of the city and sets a strong urban accent in the southern old town. It was first mentioned in documents in 1258, but the first church building on this site was probably built 500 years ago. This makes it one of the oldest in Upper Swabia.

The church is known above all for its excellently preserved frescoes from the early days of the Memmingen school in the 15th century. After the Reformation, the church was used as a shared church by the Catholic and Protestant population of the city from around 1530 to 1806, and until secularization in 1802 also by the Catholic Knights of the Cross and Franciscan nuns. This made it probably the oldest shared church in what is now Bavaria.

The church stands on the city wall in the southern old town, which was previously protected from enemy attacks by the Great and Small Pitch Towers. Until around 1340 it was outside the city wall in the so-called Wegbach settlement. At that time it was surrounded by a moat and a churchyard wall. A stone with the year 1205 was found next to the church during construction work. It is assumed that it comes from the wall. However, it could also have been a gravestone. Today the tuff stone is embedded in the northern sign.
