Memmingen's most striking building bears witness to the importance of the tanning trade. The high gable with its hinged side hatches allowed for effective drying of the leather. The bombing on April 20, 1945, not only severely damaged the Siebendächerhaus, but also devastated the entire southern part of the old town.
