The arcades of the wheelhouse spread a southern flair. Raised by one floor in the 18th century, it received its present appearance with lavish painting in the historicizing Neurococo 1906/09. The wheelhouse with its horizontal orientation, as a counterpoint to the elegantly rising town hall, visually widens the market square.

The wheelhouse is a medieval administrative building and is located centrally on the market square, taking up almost the entire north side. To the left of it is the former fish market, to the right the town hall and behind it the former Augustinian monastery with the inner courtyard of today's parish of St. John the Baptist.
