The arcades of the wheelhouse spread a southern flair. Raised by one floor in the 18th century, it received its present appearance with lavish painting in the historicizing Neurococo 1906/09. The wheelhouse with its horizontal orientation, as a counterpoint to the elegantly rising town hall, visually widens the market square.

Beautifully detailed painted house with arcades in the middle of the market square.

The wheelhouse is a medieval administrative building and is located centrally on the market square, taking up almost the entire north side. To the left of it is the former fish market, to the right the town hall and behind it the former Augustinian monastery with the inner courtyard of today's parish of St. John the Baptist.

The wheelhouse was built in 1494/95 as an administrative building of the then free imperial city Memmingen. It housed the Secret Council and the Financial Administration on the upper floors.

And this is exactly where the weekly market is, if there are no major events.

You feel like you are in an Italian marketplace. The building is brightly painted and the arcades are used by restaurants.

The tax house is a medieval administrative building of the Upper Swabian independent city of Memmingen in Bavaria.
The tax house is centrally located on the market square (house no. 16) and takes up almost the entire north side. To the left of it is the former fish market, to the right the town hall and behind it the former Augustinian monastery with the inner courtyard of today's parish of St. John the Baptist.
The tax house was built in 1494/95 as an administrative building of what was then the Free Imperial City of Memmingen. It housed the Privy Council and the financial administration on the upper floors. There were shops on the ground floor. The four-story mint tower was connected to the tax house, which was converted into a staircase in 1863 and partially demolished. The building was used as a tax house until the end of the imperial city. Since 1805 it has housed many different offices. Today there is a café and a jewelry store on the ground floor. The city's social welfare office is located on the first and second floors.
When it was built, the building was one-story and had 20 ribbed arches. In 1522/63, three arches on the right side of the house were demolished to give the town hall a more dignified setting. In 1708, it was raised by one floor. At the time it was built, it was a profane, unplastered brick building. The current neo-baroque painting was completed in 1909 thanks to the legacy of the mayor's widow Rosa von Zoller[1] and a painted neo-baroque view of the city was added in the middle of the building. It connects the town hall forecourt with the western fish market.
The building on the north side of the market square has an arcade with round arches and is painted predominantly in ochre. In the middle of the front facade, at first floor level, a view of the city from the late 19th century can be seen, otherwise baroque patterns with shells and rocailles predominate. The many windows are decorated with red-flowering geraniums in summer. The back can only be seen from the garden of the former Augustinian monastery and has no windows. The front sides are decorated with baroque curved gables; windows are only painted on. The entrance to the wheelhouse is the former mint tower.
The two floors can be reached via the staircase in the former mint tower. These have a narrow corridor that extends over the entire length of the house....

There is a great café in the wheelhouse; if you sit outside in the summer, you quickly get a somewhat southern feeling.
