The slender, 53 m high church tower with its red bricks and green copper dome greets you from afar over the Elbe floodplain. The large Protestant church in Wittenberge towers over the small old town like a faithful guardian.
The formerly small fishing and farming town of Wittenberge in the Prignitz had modest predecessor churches: the foundations of the church from the time the town was founded in the 13th century were discovered in 1997. The church was destroyed by flames in a devastating town fire in 1652. The rebuilt church also burned down in 1757. Ultimately, the simple successor building, consecrated in 1771, had to make do without a tower and was demolished in 1870 - by now far too small and dilapidated.
During the GDR era, it was difficult to structurally preserve the large church building. The community was only able to carry out a few construction projects.
The anti-church policy of the GDR made community life more difficult.
The community was finally able to have the church roof re-covered in 1991. Due to the extensive mold infestation of the supporting wooden structures discovered in 1998, the church was on the verge of closure. But with a lot of commitment, e.g. through the founding of a support association in 2001, and with a wide range of support, large funds were raised to completely renovate the church inside and out from 1999 to 2011. The choir windows, which had been bricked up in 1938, were uncovered again, the recessed concrete vault was removed and the attractive coffered ceiling in the choir room was reconstructed according to the old model. The glass artist Helge Warme, who was born in Wittenberge, gave the choir windows a lively new design. Based on the original color scheme, the interior now appears bright and magnificent.
