The ship was built by the company “Dresdner Maschinenfabrik und Schiffswerft AG” in Dresden-Neustadt between 1899 and 1900. According to current knowledge, the launch was on May 20, 1900. The ship was built without a wheelhouse, and apparently no money was spent on protecting the staff from the weather at the time. The bow and stern were built separately; it was hoped that this would make it easier to work with the bungee when mooring.

The paddle steamer was delivered to the Oberweser-Dampfschifffahrt (OWD). It now served for the next 70 years between Hann. Münden and Hamelin.

It wasn't until 1970 that the "Kaiser Wilhelm" was sold to Lauenburg on the Elbe. The steamer is still in service here today as a museum ship in its original condition. Operational management is carried out by the Association for the Promotion of the Lauenburger Elbschiffahrtsmuseum e.V. and operator of the paddle steamer KAISER WILHELM.

It makes its 39th season this year. The regular timetable includes trips from Lauenburg - Boizenburg - Bleckede and back. Some trips also to Hitzacker.

It is worth visiting the museum ship alone, because you walk through the old town of Lauenburg with its historic houses.
