The Meerbach is the natural outflow of the Steinhuder Sea. Its water supply clearly exceeds that of the above-ground tributaries of the lake. He leaves it at its northwestern end and flows from there in a westerly direction through the nature reserve Meerbruch and the town of Rehburg. Then he turns his run north and flows after 29 km at Nienburg in the Weser.
The Meerbach is channeled almost the entire length. In the Nienburg urban area, the Meerbach is also often called Aue, in the neighboring villages to the south and the Bäke.
