        "The Stuppach Madonna

The parish church of Maria Krönung in the Stuppach district is definitely worth a visit. In the side chapel of the church is one of the most important works of Christian art: the Stuppach Madonna, painted in 1516 by Matthias Grünewald.

The 500-year-old panel painting was extensively restored in 2012 and now shines in its original splendor. The first thing that catches your eye are the bright colors of the Stuppach Madonna. But let your eyes wander over the painting at your leisure! You will be amazed at the countless details that the painter has "hidden" in his picture. For example, the botanically accurate flowers and plants. Or the cityscape in the background, worked out with fine brushstrokes.

Many of these details are part of a complex pictorial symbolism. For example, the tree that blooms and bears fruit at the same time is a reference to the virginity of Mary. And the garden post in the shape of a cross is a reference to the suffering of Jesus.

Our tip: Many of these symbols are deciphered on a guided tour. You will also learn exciting things about the history of the painting. For example, which famous painter the Stuppach Madonna was originally attributed to. Or why the painting disappeared for almost 300 years. Prepare to be surprised!"
