The Old Latin School (Am Kirchhof 5) was built in 1565.The building, constructed in the late Gothic style, is located to the east of the princely mausoleum and was used as a civic and Latin school at the time. The house, which is located directly on the city wall and whose trademark is the gate leading through the middle, can thus be regarded as the forerunner of today's school system. As the oldest school in the former county of Schaumburg, the Latin school prepared, among other things, for university studies.Schoolchildren used to come and go here until 1811. Before that, there had been a school in Stadthagen since 1330 to prepare for a degree. At the end of the 16th century the so-called Gymnasium Illustre was added: an educational institution with the four faculties of philosophy, theology, jurisprudence and medicine - housed in the abandoned Franciscan monastery.
