Around 1400, the stone fortifications, of which the tower at the cattle market, a smaller tower at the castle and some city walls are left, were built.

The "tithe barn" appears for the first time in the so-called rent chamber files for the year 1750. However, the results of a historical analysis suggest the construction of the building as part of the expansion of the Stadthagen residence by Count Otto IV from 1544. The "tithe barn" undergoes a change in use to the wash house in 1881 and, as a result, fundamental changes in the interior.
