The story of the "Scheuenviertel Steinhude" dates back to 1756. The barns were built on the outskirts of Steinhude as transit barns to store the hay and straw of the farmers, which represented a high risk of fire. On the central square in front of the barns, grain was threshed and hay dried.

Since 1871, the Scheunenplatz has also been used as a fairground for the Volks- und Schützenfest and other numerous events. Saturdays out of season there is the Steinhuder weekly market.

The historic Steinhuder Scheunenviertel is centrally located on the southern shore of the Steinhuder Meer and is the starting point for guests of the Steinhuder Meer nature park and offers a wide range of leisure activities with art exhibitions, weekly markets, classic car meetings, boules and as a fairground.

The Scheunenviertel was rebuilt for the EXPO 2000 world exhibition in Hanover. A total of 13 barns house the SMT tourist information, restaurants, the art barn, the nature park information center and various gift and fashion shops.

There is a boules alley on the square.
