The Counts of Ingelheim, who were also heirs to Mespelbrunn Palace after the male line of Echter died out, built an estate on the site of an old mill. The first iron hammer - the Höllhammer - was created on it as early as 1700. The water-rich Spessart and the extensive forests favored the operation of iron hammers, as water power was needed to drive the hammers and wood or charcoal for the melting furnaces.

When Georg Ludwig Rexroth from the Odenwald took over Höllhammer in 1795, no one suspected that the foundations for today's global company would be laid. The Höllhammer (named after a gorge once west of the Elsava, the Höllgraben) quickly developed into the most powerful iron hammer in the Spessart.
