The three-aisled hall church was built between 1290 and 1340. One source says the consecration took place around 1346. It is the successor to a late Romanesque sacred building that was administered by the provosts of Kemberg from 1330 onwards. In 1415, the sacristy and the south-eastern vestibule were built according to plans by Matthias Löser. From 1856 to 1859, the neo-Gothic, 86-metre-high west tower, which towers over the town, was built according to plans by Friedrich August Ritter after the old tower collapsed.
