Here you walk over a disused railway embankment. Funny, that you walk here on a section of Birgelner jungle at the height of the treetops.

The railway embankments that still exist today in Birgelen and the surrounding area are reminiscent of the Dahlheim-Jülich railway line opened in December 1911.

This route served to transport people, the products of the textile, shoe and basketry factories manufactured in Wassenberg, and the hard coal mined in Hückelhoven.

The stations were built in Wassenberg in 1911 and in Rosenthal in 1913; Birgelen station, on the other hand, was not put into operation until 1957.

Passenger services were discontinued in 1980 and the tracks and most of the bridges on the Birgelen-Ratheim section were dismantled in 1985.

Be careful, there is a parallel path right next to the embankment. It's nicer to walk on the embankment!
