    1318

The House of Habsburg made claim to the whole Central Plateau. Already in 1295 Solothurn therefore concluded an alliance with the more powerful neighboring city of Bern. After his defeat at Morgarten Archduke Leopold of Austria planned a campaign of revenge, which should attack over Solothurn and Bern the forest from the west. It all started in the autumn of 1318 with the six-week siege of Solothurn. During the siege of Solothurn by the Habsburg Duke Leopold in 1318, when the makeshift Aare bridge ... swept along the floodwaters, the Solothurners rescued their enemies from drowning.

The Habsburgs thanked the Solothurners with a flag for the rescue on the Aare. (see picture in the St. Ursenkathedrale)

In 1382 the House of Habsburg made a last attempt by the Count of Neu-Kiburg to subjugate Solothurn. However, the farmer Hans Roth von Rumisberg thwarted the nocturnal attack on the city.

Around 1430 Solothurn could consider itself truly free and led with pride until the Thirty Years War the name "free imperial city" and in the coat of arms the imperial eagle.

Wonderful historical city with real charm and many architectural eye-catchers. Outside of the city, a complex and intact natural diversity awaits you.
