At the end of 2015, a group of volunteers built this sod hut in the Groote Peel region near Ospel. It's hard to imagine that entire families lived in these kinds of "homes" in the Peel region, on the border of Limburg and North Brabant, until around 1930. These were the very poorest laborers (day laborers, poor farmers, peat cutters) and the unemployed.
It was an unwritten rule that such houses were allowed to remain standing if they were built between sunset and sunrise and the chimney smoked in the morning! The huts were partially dug into the ground and had no side walls. The roof, which began at ground level, was covered with sods dug from the surrounding wasteland. The interior of the sod hut usually consisted of a single room, containing everything one needed. It goes without saying that living conditions and hygiene in such a hut were appalling. Consequently, residents generally didn't live very long, with some exceptions. "Rowwen Hèze" (rough Hesen), the legendary sod hut dweller Christiaan Hesen from Horst-America, has reached the age of 93! The well-known dialect group is named after him.
