The Roman garden is thanks to the merchant Anton Julius Richter, who was inspired by a trip to Italy.

In 1897, the Warburg banking family acquired the “Roman terrace” from Richter's heirs and had it further expanded by the senior gardener Else Hoffa. The Warburgs used the garden for summer festivals and theatrical performances, which peaked in the 1920s.

After the Warburgs emigrated during the National Socialist era, the garden fell into disrepair, and war destruction contributed to the further deterioration of the complex. The Warburg family bequeathed the Roman Garden to the city of Hamburg in 1951 on condition that it be preserved. In 1953 the site became a public park, but it was not until the early 1990s that extensive reconstruction took place.

The Roman Garden is a special feature of Hamburg's historic green spaces. Performances sometimes take place in the hedge theater in summer. From the Roman garden you have a beautiful view of the Elbe through the curved Thuja hedge.

The park is one of the small pearls of Hamburg. A walk there is the perfect way to spend a nice Sunday afternoon. In summer, theatrical performances entice in the open air.

The Roman Garden is a small piece of Italy on the Elbe. In the summer months, this park is also used for theter performances.

"The park is special because, like most gardens and parks on the banks of the Elbe, it was not created as an English landscape garden, but in Art Nouveau style. It is a garden monument under the Hamburg Monument Protection Act. The name Roman Garden refers to the use of Mediterranean designs and plants back."
