Atop the ruins of the Genneper Huys stands a beautiful lookout tower. It can be accessed from the Meuse side of the ruins.

You enter through a small gate marked "Uitkijkpunt Genneperhuis" (Genneper House Viewpoint) in large letters and a few steps. It's hard to miss, but you can't miss it, simply because you're standing here at an important location on a ruin with a fascinating history, gazing over two rivers and the mouth of one of them.

And on the viewing platform, you'll find information and panorama signs that tell you exactly what lies in the direction you're looking. It really doesn't need more than that.

Incidentally, a lookout tower already stood at this strategic location in Roman times, as one of the many information signs along the path that leads you here explains.

From here, at least if you climb the viewing platform, you can see the mouth of the Niers River and the Meuse River. But it's also best to walk there, as you can reach the water and see the Niers much better.

The entrance gate to the viewing platform also serves as the gateway to a fenced-in area containing the ruins of the Genneperhuis. There's also a short path that allows you to take a closer look.

It's almost certain that there was a Roman burgus near Gennep in the Maaskemp region on the Meuse River. Whether people lived at the Genneperhuis is unclear. A simple fortress was probably built around 900 AD at the mouth of the Niers River and the Meuse. The Genneperhuis was first mentioned in 1012. From that time on, it was inhabited by the Lords of Gennep. One of their descendants: Norbert of Gennep, the founder of the Norbertines. You can read the rest of the history at genneperhuis.info
