In 1669, there was a major dysentery epidemic in Sittard and the surrounding area. Rosa van Lima, the first South American to be beatified, was invoked by the city's residents and, after the epidemic had disappeared, was declared the city's patron saint. In 1675, a chapel was built in her honor on the Kollenberg, to which a procession has been drawn every year since then on the last Sunday in August.
