The Campidoglio square was also constructed according to a design by Michelangelo. Three big ones
buildings and a copy of an equestrian statue of Emperor Aurelius dominate the square. The original (restored) can be found in the Capitoline Museums on this square. Behind the
statue is the Senators Palace, on the left the Palazzo Nuovo and on the right the Palazzo dei
    Conservatory.

On the occasion of the visit of the Spanish Emperor Charles V to Rome in 1536, the Piazza del Campidoglio, which was in very poor condition, was rebuilt several times. Pope Paul III commissioned Michelangelo to design the overall layout of the square.
The Florentine architect created an elegant podium for the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, which was erected in the center of the hill in 1537 and formed the centerpiece of the new urban design.

The Campidoglio (Capitolino or Capitoline Hill) is one of the Seven Hills of Rome. It was the citadel (equivalent of the ancient Greek acropolis) of the earliest Romans. The name capitol seems to have meant "dominant height". The Capitoline contains few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval and Renaissance palaces (now housing the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza, a significant urban plan designed by Michelangelo. Here also
The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. is widely assumed to be named after the Capitoline Hill.

        Seven Hills of Rome List:
        - Aventino/Aventine
        - Celio/Caelian
        - Capitolino/Capitoline
        - Esquilino/Esquiline
        - Palatino/Palatino
        - Quirinale/Quirinal
        - Viminale/Viminal

Note that Monte Mario (the "highest" peak in Rome with 139 mt) and Gianicolo (second "highest" hill with 88 mt) are not part of the Seven Hills!
