The memorial commemorates the prisoners from 23 countries in the Langenstein-Zwieberge satellite camp.
From April 1944 to April 1945 they had to drive a 13 km long system of tunnels under the designation B2 / Malachite into the bar mountains near Halberstadt (Saxony-Anhalt).
As a result of the physical exertion and poor nutrition, nearly 2,000 prisoners died within just twelve months.
Today the memorial is an international place of remembrance, political education and historical research.(Source: gedenkstaette-langenstein.sachsen-anhalt.de)
