With a square floor plan and an unusually large, square market square, the mountain town of Marienberg was built in 1521 according to the designs of Ulrich Rülein von Calw. Between 1537 and 1539 the town hall on the market was built in the Renaissance style. The magnificent portal was preserved despite several city fires from 1538. Many of these Renaissance jewelry portals are owned by the town houses surrounding the market square. As the last large late Gothic hall church in Upper Saxony, the city church of St. Mary was built from 1558 to 1564 based on the model of the city churches in Annaberg and Pirna. It was rebuilt after the fire in keeping with the times in the early baroque style. The Zschopauer Tor, built in 1545, is the only preserved of the five city gates that were built into the city wall. The so-called Lindenhäuschen - a typical, still largely original miner's house, which is one of the oldest houses in the city of Marienberg, is a specialty.

Henry the Pious initiated in the 16th century the founding of the mining town Marienberg due to the numerous ore deposits in their environment. The entire ground plan of the city was then planned in the Italian Renaissance typical rectangular shapes.
