The Mauerwall, also known as the Heidenmauer (Heathen Wall), is a stone wall over ten kilometers long, in places up to three meters high, surrounding the highest part of Mount Odilienberg. Its age is unknown, but it is believed that it was built by Celtic tribes three thousand years ago as a refuge and rebuilt in the 4th century. By the Middle Ages, it had already lost its function and was used as a quarry.
