The monastery was built in the 7th century by Odilia, a daughter of the Frankish Duke Eticho, in the Hohenburg, which had been given to her by her father for this purpose. The place was used as a nunnery until the Middle Ages and later named after Saint Odilia, the founder of the monastery and patron saint of Alsace.

Saint Odilia is the patron saint of Alsace - and this monastery is the most visited pilgrimage site in the area. The monastery is located at an altitude of around 760 meters, so you'll have to climb quite a bit before you get here. You've earned the break and the view is worth it either way.
