The Trappist beers produced by Westmalle Abbey are known all over the world. The monks themselves are no longer involved in the brewing process, but have the overall supervision.

Unfortunately, you cannot visit the Westmalle brewery to avoid disturbing the contemplation in the abbey. The Café Trappisten opposite the abbey shows a free video of the brewery, including in English. You must reserve by calling +32(0)3 312 05 02 or by sending an email to info@trappisten.be.

In addition to beer, the monks also make cheese - this tradition has existed since 1870. You can buy the monastery cheese at the gate in three different degrees of maturity.

Trappist Abbey Westmalle. Between 1815 and 1830 the monastery falls under the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The regime wants to abolish contemplative orders such as the Trappists. But the monks of Westmalle manage to prove their usefulness to society by establishing a school and opening a guest house. Despite this difficult and uncertain period, the community grew and in 1836 the priory was elevated to an abbey. In the end, the construction of what became the current abbey around 1900 was started. In the 1930s, the abbey complex was expanded with a renovated cowshed and a new brewery. The Trappist, Trippel and Extra van Westmalle are also brewed within the walls of the abbey.

The beautiful stately lanes around the abbey are known by most hikers. It doesn't hurt to deviate from the right path every now and then. So we take a turn...

In addition to the many lanes, there are also dunes and a fen to discover in the abbey woods. Or going on reflection with Maria was nostalgia for me.
