1913
A rich history lies behind De Dennen. It all began in 1913, with the foundation of the Public Limited Company "Sanatorium der Provincie Antwerpen" by Albert Kreglinger. He bought a 9 ha site in Westmalle and had the construction plans drawn up by architect Michel de Braey.
1919
The works were started just before the outbreak of the First World War. The construction site was eventually halted during an enemy invasion and was later completely plundered. In 1919, the works were resumed. In the meantime, the domain extended over 140 ha.
1920 - 1921
In 1920, the buildings - 3 pavilions, refectory, kitchen, meeting room and chapel - were officially inaugurated by Queen Elisabeth. In 1921, the king and queen donated a laundry to the sanatorium. The sanatorium is named after the Antwerp chief secretary of the National Association for the Control of Tuberculosis, Lizzie Marsily.
