The Italian positions were predominantly located on the southern summit (Cima Sud) and the adjacent plateau. They consisted of trenches, bunkers, observation posts, and tunnels, some of which were hewn into the rock. The tunnels often contained narrow-gauge railway tracks used to transport ammunition, supplies, and the wounded.

Mixed feelings. Anxiety meets the beauty of nature. 14,000 deaths during this war and in this landscape. What might the men concerned have thought. No question, no matter where, war is always bad and pointless. One feels somehow small here and becomes humble. Schedule time and let it work.

During the First World War, Austrians and Italians fought against each other on Monte Piana (2324 m). The northern peak was occupied by the Austrians, the southern main peak by the Italians. Fortifications, trenches and tunnels on both sides were only a few meters away from each other. 14,000 soldiers, Italians and Austrians alike, lost their lives here and found their final resting place at the Nasswand War Cemetery.
