Here, at the foot of the Three Peaks, the Rienz river has its source at an altitude of 2180 m. In its upper reaches, the river initially crosses protected areas in the Three Peaks Nature Park and the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, namely the short Rienz valley and then the Höhlenstein valley.

The Three Peaks (Italian: Tre Cime di Lavaredo) are a striking mountain range in the Sesto Dolomites on the border between the Italian provinces of Belluno in the south and South Tyrol in the north.

The highest point in the group is 2999 m slm. high Great Peak (Italian: Cima Grande). It stands between the other two peaks, the Western Zinne (Cima Ovest, 2973 m) and the Kleine Zinne (Cima Piccola, 2857 m)
