Great explanation about the dewatering of the Harz mines.

The Dammgraben is a very nice hiking trail. A good starting point is the Sperberhaier Dammhaus. From there you can explore the dam ditch very nicely. The Eisenquelle (a very nice resting place), the scooping point, the stamping point HWN149 small Oker and also the stamping point HWN133 Förster-Ludwig-Platz are on the route.
If you want to do a longer tour on the Dammgraben, I recommend starting at the Sperberhaier Dammhaus and following the Dammgraben to Altenau.
Then leave the ditch in the direction of the Wolfswarte. It's a steep climb, but the view from the Wolfswarte is worth it. You could now go back the same way from the Wolfswarte, or you could opt for a slightly larger tour and hike to the goldfinch corner. When you arrive at the goldfinch corner, you should visit the Hammerstein cliffs and then start the way back via the Morgenbrodstaler Graben to the Sperberhaier Dammhaus.

They characterize the landscape of the Upper Harz to a special degree: dams, moats and underground watercourses. Many of them were created over centuries and today form a sophisticated water management system. In the past, the reservoirs and canals were built to provide the mines with a continuous supply of water, even in hot summers. Today they fulfill flood protection functions and are used to generate electricity. There are a total of 22 different routes in the Harz Mountains that lead to the waterways of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Upper Harz Water Regale".

One of them leads past this pumping station. The best way to do this is to go from Altenau to Torfhaus or turn onto the Butterstieg beforehand and visit the Wolfswarte. My tour suggestion can be found here: komoot.de/tour/306907526.
