The sparrowhawk shark is a natural mountain saddle in the Upper Harz about six kilometers southeast of Clausthal-Zellerfeld. For a long time, this depression prevented the introduction of water from the Bruchberg massif into the region around Clausthal. But water was indispensable as an energy supplier for the technical equipment used in mining. The lack of water and thus of energy slowed down the further expansion of the mines considerably.
In order to remedy this condition, the hollow of the sparrowhawk had to be overcome. The first thoughts on this were already in the middle of the 17th century. An earth wall two kilometers long and up to 23 meters high should help. It was planned to channel the water in a channel on the top of the dam from the moat to the east into the Clausthal district. The effort required for construction was, however, far too great in view of the financial and, above all, technological possibilities of the miners at the time.
