Velika Planina, literally "large pasture", is an idyllic karst plateau north east of Kamnik, at an average altitude of 1500 m. It is the largest shepherds' village in Europe today, as well as one of the few preserved in the high mountains. The main settlement includes more than 140 huts characterized by the typical circular-shaped architecture and long roofs covered with fir boards. A cultural heritage that represents one of the major attractions in the heart of Slovenia. The fastest way to reach this fairytale place is to take the old cable car that leaves from Kamniska Bistrica, just 3 km from the end of the homonymous valley. Open all year round, it costs € 17 per person round trip, with a supplement of another € 2 for the chair lift that leads to Gradisce (1666 m), the highest point of Velika Planina. A visit to Velika Planina is particularly recommended in early spring, when the crocus flowering creates one of the most spectacular natural events in Europe.
