Lentos Art Museum Linz

The Lentos Art Museum Linz is a museum of the avant-garde in Linz. As a successor to the Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz, it is one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in Austria. The 130-meter-long, internationally acclaimed building by Zurich-based architects Weber & Hofer has around 8,000 square meters of floor space and is located directly on the Danube between the Nibelungen Bridge and Brucknerhaus. Its appearance is largely characterized by a transparent, illuminated at night glass envelope. On the west side of the ground floor there is a café-restaurant.
The name Lentos is derived from the Celtic word lentos (flexible, curved), which was probably the original name for Linz (the Danube flows in a curve through the eastern city area).

The 130 meter long, internationally acclaimed building has around 8000 m² of floor space and is located directly on the Danube between the Nibelungen Bridge and the Brucknerhaus. Its appearance is largely characterized by a transparent glass envelope that is illuminated at night. There is a café-restaurant on the west side of the ground floor. The name Lentos derives from the Celtic word lentos (flexible, curved), which was probably the original name for Linz (the Danube flows in a curve through the eastern part of the city).
After the Second World War, the New Gallery of the City of Linz was founded. The basis was formed by 120 works of art from the collection of the Berlin art dealer Wolfgang Gurlitt (1888-1965), including paintings and graphics by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Emil Nolde, Lovis Corinth and Max Pechstein. Building on these holdings, the city of Linz decided to operate the Neue Galerie from 1953 as a municipal museum. From 1979 the gallery was housed on the second floor of Lentia 2000. In 1998 the city decided to build the Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, which opened on May 18, 2003.

The museum, which is impressive in its simplicity and at the same time contours the city silhouette, has already become a Linz landmark with the night-time illumination of its glass shell.
