A BASTION TELLS 14,000 YEARS OF REGIONAL AND CITY HISTORY

In the time-honored walls of the Kaisertrutz, we guide you through the eventful history of Upper Lusatia and the city of Görlitz from the beginnings to the present day. The historical tour in the basement takes you from the Ice Age to early Görlitz and tells of the first people who came to Upper Lusatia in the Paleolithic Age and settled here, to the founding of the city. Impressive archaeological finds from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages as well as the Middle Ages and their locations document the eventful history of the region. On the ground floor, the journey through time continues from the Middle Ages to the Biedermeier period. Citizens and churches owe their prosperity to the city's blossoming into a trade and commercial metropolis, which high-quality art treasures such as medieval altars and textiles as well as guild objects still make visible today.

To defend the city, Görlitz once had 32 bastions, four of which are still preserved today - including the Kaisertrutz.

The building is called Kaisertrutz and was built between 1490 and 1520 as a gun bastion of the Reichenbach Gate. At that time it was a new type of fortification. It was intended to protect the long-distance trade route Via Regia.

Since 1932, the Kaisertrutz has been an exhibition building for the Görlitz collections.
