The entire ensemble has been a listed building since 1978. The district bought the Etelser Schloss at the beginning of the 1980s and renovated the building and the park from the ground up. The castle was built in 1886 by the von Heimbruch brothers under the direction of the architect Karl Hantelmann from Hanover; The mausoleum was built in 1873 by the famous architect C.W. Haase from Hanover.
