Ironically, the most famous person for us has the humblest grave in this impressive cemetery. Plan of the tombs at the main entrance. Hesse would certainly be surprised that his burial place is now on the direct outskirts of Lugano.

Hermann Hesse died on August 9, 1962, in his house in Montagnola from the consequences of a stroke. Two days later, he was buried in the Sant'Abbondio cemetery in the closest circle of family and friends. His gravestone was designed by the Swiss sculptor Hans Jakob Meyer. It consists of a simple natural stone and bears only the names Hermann Hesse (1877–1962) and his wife Ninon Hesse (1895–1966). The modesty of the grave corresponds to Hesse's way of life and his desire for seclusion.
