After the Thirty Years' War, St. Nicholas' Church underwent several alterations: the Baroque spire replaced the Gothic spire, and galleries were added inside. To mark his elevation to the rank of prince, the sovereign, Johann Moritz of Nassau-Siegen, had a large wrought-iron and gilded crown placed on the tower in 1658. The "little crown" became the city's landmark. A particularly valuable treasure in the church's treasury is the gilded baptismal font, a piece of Peruvian silver from the 16th century, donated by the prince. Following the destruction of World War II, the striking building received a new west portal designed by Professor Gerhard Marcks.
