Kalfamer is the name of the Juister Ostend. It means something like "low, damp meadow". Because the Ostend has a sandy beach, but is otherwise rather green. It is the youngest area of the island and can only be entered when the birds are not breeding: https: / /juist.de/vor-ort/toewerland/juist-guide.

The Kalfamer is the eastern end of our island. Similar to the west, you will also find extensive sandy areas here, but they are considerably greener because new dunes are being created everywhere. The Kalfamer is the youngest area on the island.

When the Petri flood divided the island in 1651, there was still the small island of Buise, which was completely destroyed in the course of the following decades. At that time the east end of Juist was around today's eastern edge of the village.

The primary dune fields on the Kalfamer are an important resting and nesting area for birds. Thousands of birds stop here to breed and rest. Therefore, during the breeding season from April 1st to July 31st, access to the Kalfamer is only possible as part of special guided tours. During the rest of the time, a hike through the Kalfamer is only permitted on the only permitted path. You can recognize the path by the green stake markings. However, you should only do this circular hike when the tide is low in order to be able to keep a large distance to the bird colonies.

When arriving and departing by ship, you can often see seals on the Kalfamer. With a little luck you can also find amber on Kalfamer. Please note, however, that you are in the quiet zone of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. You are not allowed to leave the path Keepers pay close attention to compliance with the rules for the protection of flora and fauna. The name "Kalfamer" comes from the Frisian word "Kalv" (English Calf) = calf and "hammer", that is, low-lying, damp meadow -Hammer = Kalfamer = calf meadow.

The photo I took was taken in the direction of the airfield.
Since the town of Juist is some distance away, there is not so much activity here even during the season.
