The opencast mining in the Lower Lusatia have already fallen victim to several villages. For some it means relocation and for the others a job. If you have the opportunity to take an aerial view, you get an impression of the gigantic dimensions of the mining areas.
To take a look for yourself, you can e.g. Take the bus line 886 from Spremberg to Welzow. From the station you have to walk about half an hour on foot to open pit. Another good vantage point is coming from Neupetershain.

The Welzow-Süd opencast mine is a brown coal opencast mine in southern Lower Lusatia in the Spree-Neiße district, which is operated by Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG.
