When the Bauhaus relocated from Weimar to Dessau in 1925, Mayor Fritz Hesse not only assured Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius of funding for a new school building, but also promised him a housing development for the Bauhaus teachers, who had called themselves masters since their Weimar days.

Just one year later, the Bauhaus building and the Masters' Houses were completed and
became symbols of a design and educational revolution.

To this day, they represent white modernism par excellence worldwide.

A must - and of course you have to go inside. Parallel to the Bauhaus building, Walter Gropius was commissioned by the city of Dessau to build three identical semi-detached houses for the Bauhaus masters and a single house for the director. They were built in a pine grove on today's Ebertallee.

Gropius' plan envisaged constructing the building ensemble according to the modular principle with industrially prefabricated parts. In doing so, he wanted to implement the principles of rational building, both in the architecture and in the building process itself. However, due to the technical possibilities at the time, his plan could only be partially implemented.
Nested cubic bodies of different heights give the houses their shape. On the street side, the semi-detached houses are characterized by generously glazed studios, on the sides glass bands let light into the staircases.

The reconstructed parts can be recognized by the flawless exposed concrete and the white windows. The eastern house and the pump room with wall have been completely rebuilt. A walk around the houses is possible and the minimum level of recognition of this architectural-historical monument.
A visit is recommended, otherwise you will miss the details of the interior design. You should set aside an hour for this.
