The section is one of the many wooded areas incorporated into the Forest of Dean. The forest was designated the first national forest park in 1938. Today it is a wildlife haven and very popular with tourists. It is still a working forest, producing sustainable timber for the UK market.

All Saints Church Newland, traditionally and affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Forest, dates back to the early 1200s. ... The village of Newland did not exist before the clearing was made in the Forest and the church built. This historic church is home to the Miners Brass a symbol of the Royal Forest of Dean.

Had lunch in the Ostrich pub Newland half way around the walk. Food and drink was first class well worth a visit
