There's no water here yet, but there are nice restaurants and a small shop.

The village of Westenschouwen is located at the tip of Schouwen-Duiveland. It must have originated as a fishing village of Paalvoetsijde. It was about half a kilometer from the current beaches of Westenschouwen. It has disappeared into the water. Later, a new dike and harbor were built inland, the new harbor was called Westenschouwen from 1400. The village's main source of income was herring fishing. Later, trade also became increasingly important. The harbor of Westenschouwen silted up at the beginning of the 16th century. A new harbor was built in nearby Burghsluis, but prosperity ended for Westenschouwen. The merchants all headed for Zierikzee.

There is a legend about the decline of Westenschouwen, 'The Lady of Westenschouwen'. A fisherman is said to have caught a mermaid and brought it to the village. When the mermaid begged the fishermen to give him back his wife because she would die on land, the fishermen refused. The mermaid is said to have been enraged and to have pronounced a curse on Westenschouwen:

“Westenschouwen, you will mourn that you have robbed my lady,
Westenschouwen will perish, only the tower will remain”.

      The Plump Tower
Coincidence or not, Westenschouwen fell into disrepair after that. However, the tower was demolished in 1845. Nowadays De Plompe Toren of the drowned village of Koudekerke is connected to the saga. The tower is located just beyond the neighboring village of Burgh-Haamstede. When entering the Plompe Toren you will hear the saga of the Lady of Westenschouwen.
