The church in Wengern traces its foundation back to Charlemagne (768 – 814 AD).
Saint Liborius was the patron saint of the Wengern. The church was first mentioned in documents in 1246, it may have been a pagan place of worship for the Saxons in the border and battle area between Saxony and Franconia, but that is not exactly known!
The altar and the baroque altar picture made of wood with the Romanesque triumphal cross above it, the baroque pulpit, the lectern with the pelican and the organ prospect are an impressive decoration of the church, from the tower of which "little Anton", one of the oldest bells still ringing, resonates in the triple chime in a wide area with the inscription: "Anthonius is called ick, Johann Sluck gott mick. Anno Domn. 1529".

"Although it is very old and has experienced many storms, it is nevertheless ... a venerable place that has seen the history of a millennium pass by. What eloquent language its stones speak in silent silence!"

          Evangelical village church Wengern:
"Anthonius is my name, Johann Sluck, god mick. Anno Domn. 1529"

"The church in Wengern traces its founding back to Charlemagne (768 - 814 AD). The diocese of Paderborn was founded in 799, whose cathedral was placed under the protection of Saint Liborius, who was also considered the patron saint of the Wengern church Perhaps the first wooden church was erected in Wengern at that time. Possibly its location, in the vicinity of which the Opfersiepen and the Schmalenbecke flow into the Elbschebach, was previously a pagan place of worship for the Saxons in the border and combat area between Saxony and Franconia. The church is documented first mentioned in 1246. Romanesque, Gothic and neo-Gothic stylistic elements indicate that the church has undergone many conversions over the centuries. In 1936 the wooden ceiling was installed over the central nave and the chancel was redesigned. The altar and the baroque altarpiece made of wood with the Romanesque triumphal cross above it, the baroque pulpit, the lectern with the pelican and the organ prospect are an impressive design of the church, from the tower of which “little Anton” resonates in the triple chime, one of the oldest still ringing bells in the area with the inscription: “Anthonius is called ick, Johann Sluck god mick. Anno Domn. 1529"...."

"Immediately after meeting the river, I turn sharply to the west and walk through picturesque Wengern, where everything seems to be pointed towards Henriette Davidis, here the pride in the famous daughter of the place lives on at every corner.
Their image of women may seem catastrophically unemancipated at the moment, but there is nothing wrong with a sensible cookbook; Wengern is proud of the famous daughter, there is a Davidis Museum (closed due to the epidemic) and a hotel of the same name.

“Johanna Friederika Henriette Katharina Davidis (* March 1, 1801 in Wengern; † April 3, 1876 in Dortmund) was a German author of cookbooks. Although many similar cookbooks had already been published at the time (...), Davidis' Practical Cookbook developed into one of the most important cookbooks of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was part of the basic equipment of many German households. The many antiquarian copies still available today show that the book was actively used and annotated. Many families passed the Practical Cookbook on from generation to generation.”

The Wengern village church is a listed church building in the center of Wengern, a district of Wetter (Ruhr) in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located just a few meters above the stream in the Elbsche valley in the area of the confluence of Opfersiepen and Schmalenbecke, two smaller streams. The neighboring buildings include the glue box and the mill (Henriette Davidis Museum). The church, which has been rebuilt and expanded several times, dates back to medieval origins. The current building is characterized by the stone-faced Ruhr sandstone masonry and has been part of Wetter's list of listed buildings since 1985. The village church is used by the Wengern Evangelical Parish, which belongs to the Hattingen-Witten church district of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
