Unfortunately, the opening hours are too short, i. After a hike, a visit is hardly worthwhile.

he Rheinfels castle ruins are located on a rocky hill 115 meters above the Gündelbach valley and the town of St. Goar.
After it was built by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen in 1245, it was first used as a toll castle. Due to its stable construction, it was able to withstand any siege and attack attempts for centuries. After the count family died out, the castle was taken over by the landgraves of Hessen-Kassel in the 15th century and expanded in its outer area into the most defensive and largest fortress in the Middle Rhine Valley. At this time it experienced its historical climax as a cultural center.
After it was blown up by the French Revolutionary Army in the late 18th century, Rheinfels Castle fell into ruin and was only used as a quarry.
The purchase of the Prince of Prussia in 1818 prevented the ruin from completely falling apart, so that around a third of the walls were preserved.

Beautiful castle ruins, worth a visit. The largest German castle complex. If you walk to the start of the RheinBurgenWeg, you will pass the outer defensive wall.

Very beautiful castle from 1245, which has been expanded again and again.
Guided tour of the castle is recommended
