Rheinfels Castle is the largest surviving castle ruin on the Rhine. Although time has left its mark on the walls, you can still imagine what the magnificent fortress must have looked like.

Part of the castle is now a museum where you can learn about the interesting history of the place. You can find information about the opening times here: stadt-st-goar.de/urlaub-in-st-goar/#rheinfels.

Unfortunately, the opening times are too short, i.e. a visit is hardly worthwhile after a hike.

Changed (even shorter!) opening times apply from October 31, 2022:
Open the castle and the museum
      Friday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m
      (last admission at 2:00 p.m.).
The castle remains closed on snow and ice.

To protect the bats, there is a protection period from 01.10. – 31.03.
An inspection of the weir and mine passages is not possible during this period!!!

Renovation work is planned for 2023, which will further limit the already reduced offer!

he Rheinfels castle ruins are located on a rocky hill at a height of 115 meters above the Gündelbach valley and the town of St. Goar.
After it was built by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen in 1245, it initially served as a customs castle. Due to its stable construction, it was able to withstand any siege and attack attempts for centuries. After the family of counts died out, the castle was taken over by the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel in the 15th century and expanded to become the largest and most well-fortified fortress in the Middle Rhine Valley. At this time it experienced its historical peak as a cultural center.
After being blown up by the French revolutionary army in the late 18th century, Rheinfels Castle fell into ruins and was only used as a quarry.
The purchase of the Prince of Prussia in 1818 prevented the ruins from completely falling apart, so that about a third of the walls were preserved.
