    Jägertor Potsdam
The Jägertor from 1733 is the oldest preserved Potsdam city gate. It stands on the axis of Lindenstrasse and forms one of the city exits to the north. It was named after the electoral Jägerhof in front of the city. The gate was originally part of the Potsdam excise wall, which was not used for fortification, but to prevent soldiers from deserting and goods from being smuggled. Since Lindenstrasse cut diagonally through the former wall, the Jägertor was built diagonally to the line of the wall.
Free-standing after the city wall was demolished in 1869, the Jägertor presents itself as a pillar architecture of the Tuscan order with straight beams and a crowning group of sculptures. It depicts a stag flanked by hunting dogs and flanked by flaming grenades. This makes clear both the reference to the Jägerhof and the military purpose of the gate. The architrave and crowning are made of sandstone, while the rusticated pillars were built from plastered brickwork.
