The Schmalkaldic War was led by the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire with the aim of pushing back the prevailing Protestantism in the area of the Schmalkaldic League, primarily Hesse and Kursachsen. The Protestant troops were defeated by a superior force of the Imperial Army.
However, Protestantism could not be stopped.
