The not insignificant farming village of Selhorst was already in the Middle Ages in the vicinity of Harderwijk. The town itself was first mentioned in 1231 (Herderewich), when Count Otto II von Geldern gave the market town town rights.
It developed into a nationally important fishing and port city, joined the Hanseatic League in the 15th century and had relatively good land connections to the Rhine (karweg, cart road to Arnhem).
