The Protestant Grote Kerk is a three-aisled basilica, partly dating back to the late 14th century; the transept dates from the 15th century. The tower collapsed on January 28, 1797 and was never rebuilt. The church was extensively restored in the years 1972-1980, with important 16th-century murals being discovered. The originally much larger church was initially called the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk and was dedicated to Mary.
