The Pfaffenwald University Observatory is an observatory that has existed since 1934 in the high-lying Stuttgart district of Vaihingen, and was donated to the University of Stuttgart in 1972. The observatory was originally the private property of the manufacturer Hermann Fellmeth, who had it built near his country house in the Vaihingen Pfaffenwald. Until it was handed over to the university (on whose Vaihingen campus it is located), the observatory was used privately, then mainly for student training. Since its renovation with the help of the Zeiss company, it has been a regular observation station for a university working group founded in 1977 (Astronomy Working Group) and also serves as a public observatory. A disadvantage for valuable observations, however, is the student dormitory built directly to the east.

The Pfaffenwald observatory, built in 1934 by Hermann Fellmeth, stands, somewhat strange, in the middle of a student residence on the university grounds. After the decision in 1955 to separate the university spatially and to relocate certain institutes to the Pfaffenwald, construction did not begin there until 1960. This makes the observatory the oldest building on campus. After Hermann Fellmeth's death there was no buyer and she was threatened with demolition. Fortunately, it was donated to the university in 1972 with the only condition that it be restored and made accessible to the public.
The observatory has the largest functional Schupmann - Medial in Europe.
There is more information and an event program on the website of the University of Stuttgart.
