The protected moor area is the remnant of a once huge moor, which was divided into several sub-areas. To the approximately 11,000 ha large area, which was the largest contiguous high moor area in Central Europe, belonged beside the Esterweger can also the Ostrhauderfehner moor, the Saterländer Westermoor and the Timpermoor.
The nature reserve with the license plate NSG WE 245 has been under conservation since December 22, 2005.
In the Esterweger Dose is the last breeding occurrence of the golden plover in Central Europe.
