Milestones on the road to freedom. From Sainte-Mère-Eglise to Metz and Bastogne, 12,000 symbolic milestones mark the road traveled by General Patton's army. From Avranches they mainly evoke the rapid advance of the 20th Corps of the 3rd US Army. The landmark of freedom was unveiled in 1947 as a tribute to the US (the 48 stars represent the 48 states). In addition to the freedom sign in the form of a torch, modeled on the Statue of Liberty in New York, the stone is decorated with the emblem of the 3rd US Army and with waves that refer to the Atlantic Ocean.
