The Rendsburg city lake is about 3.5 hectares in size and up to 1.5 m deep. The Stadtsee was created in 1893 during the construction of the Kiel Canal. It goes back to a narrow arm of the Eider that used to run south of the old town, which was called the Holstengraben according to its geographical location.
The old town itself was on an island or a Werder between the northern main arm of the Eider with the Obereider and the southern Holstengraben. The construction of a lock finally lowered the water level of the Obereider, so that the old town lost its original island location. Due to further construction work, the lake was completely cut off from the Obereider in 1910. The former island location of Rendsburg can still be seen today on the basis of the Ober- and Untereider and the Stadtsee.
